The Objective of a Hand

All your tiles form groups of matches or sequences.

Concept

Your objective is to create a legal hand of matches & sequences.

Your job in each hand is to be the first player to make a legal winning hand. The standard winning hand is four completed groups, called "melds", plus one pair.

Your tiles must form a legal hand to win, after which you tally your points via the scoring system.

Example of winning tiles
Meld 1: sequence of tiles (1, 2, 3)
Meld 2: matching tiles (three 5 tiles)
Meld 3: sequence of tiles (7, 8, 9)
Meld 4: matching tiles (three green dragons)
Pair: of matching East tiles
A Winning Hand

All tiles must be in groups

Most winning hands are four melds plus one pair. Later lessons teach what counts as a meld.
